Nicosia
Nicosia is the largest city and capital of Cyprus and there’s plenty of things to see and do whether you’re here for a week or a weekend.
Learn more about Cyprus’ rich history with a trip to the Cyprus Museum. The museum houses exhibitions from various time periods from the Stone Age to the Roman era. Amongst the collections you’ll find coins, jewellery, sculptures as well as priceless treasures from Ancient Greek tombs.
Alternatively, to appreciate some fine examples of Byzantine art head over to the Byzantine Museum. You’ll find works spanning as far back as 1,500 years such as mosaic fragments, paintings, sacred vessels and historical books.
A trip to Nicosia wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of the famous (and powerful!) traditional Cypriot coffee. Brewed in a tall copper pot, this traditional brew certainly packs a punch. If coffee isn’t your thing, you could always take a trip to Nicosia’s only brewpub, Pivo Microbrewery. Step foot inside where you’ll be able to sample 4 different varieties of beers; take your pick from Bavarian weiss, pilsner, American IPA and dark lager straight from the tank. The design of the building is something to be admired too, this 100 year-old manor house is kitted out with stone walls, marble archways and wooden furniture giving it a real old-town vibe.
A trip to Cyprus wouldn’t be complete without sampling some traditional Cypriot souvlakia (grilled meat skewers) and mezze (a selection of small dishes which can range from dips such as tzatziki and hummus, fish cakes, grilled vegetables and meatballs)
There’s plenty of Nicosia worth exploring and we’ve highlighted just a fraction of it.
